About Salt Flat & Contact
Who is Salt Flat Trading Co.?
Who is Salt Flat Trading Co.?
We’re a small, family-run company near the shore of the Great Salt Lake, in business since 2016. We search the world for natural coral, shells, petrified wood, and crystals, and we carry all kinds of decor for both indoors and outdoors. We buy from independent suppliers, never from publicly traded companies or Amazon sellers. Salt Flat Trading Co. is part of the Adobe Rock family of companies.

Authenticity & Sourcing
Is your coral real?
Is your coral real?
Yes. All of our coral is real, natural coral.
Is it legal to buy and own coral?
Is it legal to buy and own coral?
Yes. Our coral is imported by an established U.S. importer with CITES export permits from the country of origin, and it is cleared by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
Is your coral sustainably sourced?
Is your coral sustainably sourced?
Our coral is collected under CITES sustainable-yield export quotas, which are reviewed and permitted by the source country’s wildlife authority.
Is the color natural, or is it dyed?
Is the color natural, or is it dyed?
Our coral, shells, and sea life are natural in color. Blue coral is naturally blue; we clean it with mineral oil to bring out its color. Many of our shells are polished to bring out their natural shine. The only painted item is our Polished Midas Abalone, and we note this on its product page.
Where do your products come from?
Where do your products come from?
Our coral comes from the Indo-Pacific. Our crystals and petrified wood come from Madagascar and Indonesia.
Is your petrified wood real?
Is your petrified wood real?
Yes. Petrified wood is a fossil formed over millions of years. Trees were buried in sediment, and minerals like silica slowly replaced the wood, turning it into stone while keeping its grain and shape.
Unique Pieces, Sizes & Photos
Will my piece look exactly like the photo?
Will my piece look exactly like the photo?
For our one-of-a-kind items, yes. We label and photograph each individual piece of coral, petrified wood (slabs, bowls, and branches), spheres, and crystals, so you receive the exact piece you choose. For other items, such as shells and pocket stones, you’ll receive a piece similar to the photo.
Why are sizes and weights listed as ranges?
Why are sizes and weights listed as ranges?
Natural pieces don’t come in exact sizes. A “12–15 inch” listing means your piece measures somewhere in that range at its longest point.
Can I see the exact piece before I buy?
Can I see the exact piece before I buy?
Yes. Each individually photographed piece is shown on its product page. Just pick the one you like.
What is a Custom Coral Creation?
What is a Custom Coral Creation?
It’s a one-of-a-kind coral sculpture designed to your vision. You can blend several coral types into one piece and make it as large as you’d like, with or without a base. Custom pieces start at $500, and exact pricing depends on your design and size. Request a quote on our Custom Coral Creation page, and we’ll respond within 3 business days. Depending on the size of the order, most custom pieces are completed and shipped in 4–6 weeks. Because of their size, they ship on a pallet.
Aquariums, Hermit Crabs & Pets
Can I put your coral in an aquarium?
Can I put your coral in an aquarium?
Yes, our white coral is aquarium safe. Blue coral and Polished Midas Abalone are not aquarium safe.
Are your hermit crab shells safe for hermit crabs?
Are your hermit crab shells safe for hermit crabs?
Yes. Our turbo shells are natural and safe for hermit crabs to use. Polished turbo shells are polished by machine or by hand, with no paint.
What size shell does my hermit crab need?
What size shell does my hermit crab need?
Size by the opening, not just the overall shell. Your crab should be able to pull fully inside, with its large claw closing the opening like a door. Each of our hermit crab shell listings shows both the overall size and the opening size, so check both before you order.
Care & Display
How do I clean and whiten coral?
How do I clean and whiten coral?
Dusting is the best way to care for coral. A quick pass with compressed air or a soft, dry brush is all it needs most of the time.
If white coral ever needs brightening, you can whiten it occasionally. This isn’t meant for regular cleaning:
- Rinse off dust with plain water.
- Mix 1 part household bleach with 10 parts water. Wear gloves, work in a well-ventilated area, and never mix bleach with other cleaners.
- Soak the coral for 30 minutes to 2 hours, checking it often. Longer soaks can weaken the coral.
- Rinse thoroughly with fresh water.
- Let it dry completely, ideally in the sun for a day or two.
Don’t bleach blue coral, Polished Midas Abalone, or polished shells. Bleach can strip their color and finish.
How fragile is coral?
How fragile is coral?
Coral is very fragile. Handle it gently and support it from the base.
Can I display coral, shells, or petrified wood outdoors?
Can I display coral, shells, or petrified wood outdoors?
Yes, but expect them to weather. These are natural items, so outdoors they will fade, crack, and wear over time, just as they would in nature.
Do you sell stands or easels for slabs?
Do you sell stands or easels for slabs?
Not yet, but we’re working on adding them. Stands and easels are not included with our slabs.
